Successful weekend for HB Racing: In Zandvoort (NL) the team from Austria claimed its first podium-result in the current ADAC GT Masters season. Christopher Zanella (CH) and Florian Spengler (D) showed a flawless performance in the wet race on Sunday and crossed the finish line in third position. Already on the day before the duo had secured a championship point for the tenth position. In the sister car Marco Mapelli (I) and Norbert Siedler (A) suffered from a streak of bad luck.
A few minutes before the second race on Sunday HB Racing decided to use a setup for wet conditions on both Lamborghini Huracán GT3. The brave decision was rewarded: Shortly before the start it started to rain and the conditions on the track became difficult. From his 17th starting position Christopher Zanella started a successful race to catch-up. With a furious performance, the Swiss improved a place in nearly every single lap and entered the pit-lane for the mandatory driver change in seventh position.
After a perfect pit-stop, Zanella’s team-mate Florian Spengler continued the race in third position. Under immense pressure from the cars behind, the 29-year-old had to defend his position in the front group. “It was hard work,” Spengler reported afterwards. “The intensity of the rain changed again and again. Every lap was different.” But the German avoided any kind of mistake as well and brought the third place home safely.
The joy about the first trophy of the season was huge: “What a race,” Team-Manager Andreas Fuchs celebrated. “Everyone did an awesome job. Christopher’s and Florian’s performance was sensational. Thanks a lot to the drivers and the team members, who worked perfectly during the pit-stop.”
The second Huracán GT3 of HB Racing suffered from bad luck again in Zandvoort: In both qualifyings red flags and massive traffic caused starting positions 18 (Saturday) and 19 (Sunday) for Norbert Siedler and Marco Mapelli. While a blown-up tyre led to an early retirement in the first race, the two experienced drivers dropped back from sixth to 23rd after a drive-through penalty on Sunday. In the end, the duo finished in 17th position.
In two weeks HB Racing wants to confirm the successes from Zandvoort in the ADAC GT Masters races at Nürburgring. In between another season highlight is on the Austrian team’s schedule: Bernard Delhez, Gilles Vannelet, Mike Stursberg and Christopher Zanella will share a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 of the team at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps next weekend.
